Facts about the Mendips
The Mendip Hills, commonly known as the Mendips, are located south of Bristol and Bath in Somerset, running east to west between Weston-Super-Mare and Frome. The highest part of the hills, in the west, has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hills are largely formed of limestone, which is quarried in several places, and they support a rich range of plants and wildlife.
The Mendips are a popular area for outdoor sports, offering plenty of adventures for climbers, hillwalkers and cavers. For those who want a more leisurely look at some of the area’s stunning caves, a visit to Wookey Hole Caves is a perfect day out.
The Mendip Hills are also known for their beautiful country towns. Glastonbury is a new age centre packed with unusual shops and interesting restaurants. A walk up its tor gives breath-taking views of the Somerset Levels, while Glastonbury Abbey is a beautiful ruin steeped in history.
Frome is a picturesque small town with a thriving music scene, excellent pubs and restaurants and a host of interesting boutiques. Water from a spring outside the Church of St John the Baptist flows down the centre of charming, medieval Cheap Street in the centre of the town.
Shepton Mallet is a bustling market town dating back to Roman times. It offers plenty of interesting attractions including Shepton Mallet Prison, Kilver Court Gardens and Cranmore Railway Station with its working steam train.
